A university built from the fragments of a divided past
In short: How do you build an institution from institutions that were designed to be separate? The University of Johannesburg was forged by merging three distinct entities, each with deep roots in South Africa's complex history of segregation and industrial growth. It is a living experiment in educational unification.
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) was established on January 1, 2005, as a product of the National Plan for Higher Education. This initiative restructured the country's landscape, reducing 36 universities and technikons to just 22 institutions. The formation of UJ occurred via a combination involving Vista University's Soweto and East Rand sites, alongside the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) and Rand Afrikaans University (RAU).
The constituent parts carried heavy historical weight. RAU was founded in 1966 as an academic hub for Afrikaners, while TWR had roots in a 1903 technical institute established to serve the gold mines—an institution that originally restricted admission to white students proficient in English. In contrast, Vista University began admitting black students in 1982 across urban settlements. By merging these entities, UJ sought to bridge historical chasms, creating an identity based on unification rather than separation.
Today, UJ is one of South Africa's largest comprehensive contact universities, hosting over 54,000 students as of 2024. Its branding reflects this new era; it eschewed the traditional coat of arms for a logo featuring two African hoopoes facing each other. These birds symbolize the union of its predecessor institutions and represent freedom, while the space between them forms an open book—a blank slate for students to write their own futures.
The university operates across four main campuses in Johannesburg: Auckland Park Kingsway (the administrative seat), Bunting Road, Doornfontein, and Soweto. Each site retains a unique character, from the specialized health services at Doornfontein to the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Bunting Road.
