Before Yellowstone, a Civil War president saved California's granite giants
In short: While Yellowstone is often cited as America's first national park, Yosemite holds an earlier distinction of preservation. During the Civil War's chaos of 1864, a bill was endorsed by Abraham Lincoln to safeguard its unique scenery—representing the initial instance within American history where territory was reserved for preservation. The land became designated for conservation purposes.
Yosemite’s path to protection was paved by both tragedy and advocacy. The California Gold Rush of 1849 brought an influx of settlers who caused significant damage to the valley's ecosystem. In response, President Abraham Lincoln designated the area as protected wilderness in 1864. This move predated the official establishment of Yellowstone National Park in 1872 by eight years, making Yosemite a pioneer in American conservation policy.
The park's preservation was further championed by famed conservationist John Muir. After falling in love with the area's beauty in 1868, Muir campaigned against the damage caused by the booming livestock industry, specifically sheep grazing in the meadows. His writings and activism helped secure the official national park status on October 1, 1890, when Congress allotted more than 3,800 hectares for the park.
The legacy of conservation continued into the 20th century with Teddy Roosevelt. During a 1903 camping expedition, his experiences in Yosemite inspired the broader National Park and National Forest systems. Today, the park remains a massive wilderness of nearly 1,200 square miles, featuring landmarks like the 739-meter-high Yosemite Falls and the iconic Half Dome, which rises 2,682 meters above sea level.
Modern conservation efforts continue to expand the park's reach. In 2016, a nonprofit fund donated an additional 162 hectares of land, marking the largest expansion in nearly 70 years. This ongoing stewardship ensures that Yosemite remains a diverse ecological treasure, home to over 500 ancient giant sequoias and 8,500 hectares of alpine meadows.
