A campus born from war and forged through autonomy
In short: In 1945, a rescue raid on a Japanese internment camp left the University of the Philippines Los Baños in ruins. From those ashes, it rose to become the country's largest campus, evolving from a specialized agricultural college into a powerhouse of autonomous research and global academic partnership.
Founded in 1909 as the UP College of Agriculture, the institution was a pioneer for Southeast Asian agricultural research. Its early years were defined by academic expansion, including the 1910 establishment of the Forest School and the 1918 transfer of the College of Veterinary Science to Los Baños. By the early 1920s, the campus had become a regional hub, attracting students from across the Philippines and countries as far as China, Japan, and India.
The university's history is marked by a violent turning point during World War II. Occupied by the Japanese army, the campus served as an internment camp for over 2,000 civilians. While a 1945 US Army paratrooper raid successfully rescued the internees, the subsequent Japanese retaliation resulted in the destruction of campus facilities and the deaths of approximately 1,500 Filipino civilians. Post-war reconstruction was a monumental task, funded by a ₱470,546 share of the Philippine-US War Damage Funds and significant support from the Rockefeller Foundation and USAID.
The 1970s sparked a period of institutional transformation. Following a period of social unrest and a request for secession from the main UP system, Presidential Decree No. 58 was signed in 1972. This granted UPLB autonomy as the system's first constituent university. This independence allowed for rapid expansion, including the creation of the Institute of Plant Breeding in 1975 and the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in 1979. Today, it manages the Mount Makiling Forest Reserve and maintains high-level international partnerships, including dual-doctorate programs with universities in France, the UK, and Australia.
