In short: Established in 2005, the University of California, Merced is the newest campus in the UC system. Despite its youth, it recently achieved R1 research status, a rare feat for such a young institution. Built on former golf course land, the campus serves as a vital educational hub for the Central Valley.

The creation of UC Merced was a decades-long endeavor driven by the need to provide educational access to the San Joaquin Valley, a region that historically lacked a UC presence. Following a 1988 vote by the UC Regents to expand, planners spent years navigating complex environmental reviews and site selection challenges. The project faced significant hurdles, including inadequate environmental assessments for initial sites and skepticism from state lawmakers who questioned its feasibility. The search eventually narrowed to Merced, where the university was strategically placed to address the educational needs of a growing population.

Environmental stewardship became a defining characteristic of the campus development. Because the region contains sensitive vernal pool habitats and endangered species like fairy shrimp, the university relocated its main footprint to the former Merced Hills Golf Course. This site was chosen because the land had already been disturbed, minimizing further ecological impact. The university also partnered with the Virginia Smith Trust to protect thousands of acres of surrounding grasslands, establishing the Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve, which is now part of the UC Natural Reserve System.

The university has grown rapidly since its first day of classes in 2005, when it welcomed just 875 students. By 2025, it achieved the prestigious R1 Carnegie research classification, becoming the only institution with this designation in the Central Valley. Beyond its research output, the university is noted for its commitment to sustainability, claiming that all its buildings are LEED-certified. Today, the campus continues to expand its mission through specialized programs like the SJV PRIME+ medical pathway, which trains future doctors to serve the underserved communities of the San Joaquin Valley.
