In short: As the wife of Vice President JD Vance, Usha Vance brings a unique background to the role of Second Lady. A former high-powered litigator and Yale Law graduate, she has transitioned from a career in complex civil litigation to a public life defined by advocacy for childhood literacy and education.

Born Usha Bala Chilukuri in 1986 in San Diego, California, she was raised in an upper-middle-class environment by her parents, who immigrated to the United States from Andhra Pradesh, India. Her academic journey was marked by high achievement; she graduated summa cum laude from Yale University in 2007 with a degree in history. She later attended the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar, earning a Master of Philosophy in early modern history, before returning to Yale to complete her Juris Doctor in 2013.

Her legal career was distinguished by prestigious clerkships, including roles with Judge Amul Thapar, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. Before resigning in July 2024 to focus on her family, she worked as an associate at the law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson. In this capacity, she handled civil litigation and appeals for high-profile clients across industries such as technology, entertainment, and higher education. Her husband, JD Vance, has frequently described her as brilliant and more accomplished than himself.

Since becoming Second Lady in 2025, Usha Vance has focused her public platform on childhood literacy. She launched the annual Summer Reading Challenge and hosts a podcast titled Storytime with the Second Lady, which features children’s stories and guest readers. Her path to this role involved significant political engagement, including delivering the introductory address for her husband at the 2024 Republican National Convention and providing strategic advice during his vice-presidential campaign and debate preparations.
