The tragic sinking of USS Juneau and the fate of the five Sullivan brothers
In short: When the light cruiser USS Juneau was torpedoed in 1942, it vanished in seconds, taking hundreds of sailors with it. Among the casualties were five brothers whose loss became a symbol of wartime sacrifice. Only ten men survived the ordeal, left to drift for eight days in shark-infested waters.
Commissioned in February 1942, the Atlanta-class light cruiser USS Juneau saw intense combat during the Pacific theater of World War II. The ship participated in critical operations, including the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, where its anti-aircraft fire helped defend the carrier Hornet. By November 1942, the cruiser was tasked with escorting reinforcements to Guadalcanal. During the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on 13 November, the ship was struck by a torpedo from a Japanese destroyer, forcing it to withdraw for repairs while listing heavily.
Tragedy struck later that morning when the submarine I-26 fired two torpedoes at the damaged cruiser. One hit the ship in the same location as the previous strike, causing a massive explosion that broke the vessel in two. The Juneau disappeared beneath the surface in just 20 seconds. Due to fears of further submarine attacks and the assumption that the explosion was unsurvivable, nearby escort ships departed without conducting a search. In reality, over 100 sailors had initially survived the sinking, but they were left to face the elements and shark attacks for over a week.
The loss of the five Sullivan brothers, who were serving together on the ship, became a defining element of the tragedy. While some reports suggest two brothers survived the initial sinking only to perish later, others indicate they went down with the ship. Ultimately, only ten survivors were recovered by rescue aircraft on 20 November 1942. The wreck of the Juneau remained lost for decades until it was discovered in 2018 by Paul Allen’s research team at a depth of 4,200 meters off the Solomon Islands. Today, the ship is remembered through the naming of subsequent naval vessels and a memorial center in New Jersey.
