A cinematic trek to the Everest Base Camp for a lost wish
In short: When three elderly friends set out to fulfill their late companion's final request, they find that physical endurance is only half the battle. Their journey across Nepal and India becomes a spiritual exploration of friendship, aging, and the heavy weight of past regrets.
Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, Uunchai (2022) serves as a sentimental exploration of senior citizenship. The narrative follows Amit, Om, and Javed—three aged friends who embark on a trek to Everest Base Camp to honor the last wish of their fourth friend, Bhupen. They are joined by Mala, Bhupen's long-lost love, whose presence introduces a layer of personal regret into the group dynamic as they navigate the physical limitations of old age.
The production was an expansive undertaking involving multiple locations across Nepal, including Lukla and Kathmandu, as well as sites in Kargil, Delhi, Mumbai, and Uttar Pradesh. Filming commenced in October 2021 and concluded in April 2022. The film features a prominent ensemble cast led by Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, and Danny Denzongpa, with Neena Gupta making a significant appearance alongside Sarika's return to cinema.
Critically, the film has sparked debate regarding its pacing and emotional delivery. While many reviewers praised the 'top-notch' performances and the relatable, heart-warming core of the story, others criticized its excessive length and 'sanctimonious' tone. Despite these mixed reviews—ranging from 1 to 4 stars across various outlets—the film achieved significant commercial success, grossing ₹48.99 crore worldwide and winning awards for Best Direction and Best Supporting Actress at the 70th National Film Awards.
The project marked Barjatya's directorial comeback since 2015 and stands as the 60th production by Rajshri Productions. It highlights a recurring theme in Indian family dramas: the sanctity of friendship among the elderly, framed here as a literal and metaphorical 'Uunchai' (Altitude) that tests the boundaries of human spirit.
