From living by a generator to breaking NBA records in one season
In short: Before becoming the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, V. J. Edgecombe grew up in Bimini, The Bahamas, where limited electricity meant living off a generator. His rapid ascent from a high school standout to a record-breaking professional is a remarkable feat of talent and transition.
Born on July 30, 2005, in Bimini, V. J. Edgecombe’s journey to the Philadelphia 76ers involved a significant move from The Bahamas to the United States during ninth grade. After settling in Florida, he played for Victory International Institute before moving to Long Island Lutheran in New York. His high school career was defined by rapid statistical growth; as a junior, he averaged 15.5 points and 2.2 steals per game, eventually earning New York Gatorade Player of the Year honors.
His rise through the recruiting ranks was equally meteoric. Originally ranked 153rd by 247Sports, Edgecombe climbed into the top five following his performance on the Adidas 3SSB travel circuit. After committing to Baylor University on January 14, 2024, he enjoyed a single standout season, earning Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors while averaging 15 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
Edgecombe's professional debut on October 22, 2025, was historic. Scoring 34 points against the Boston Celtics, he set the all-time record for most points in an NBA debut for the 76ers franchise, surpassing Allen Iverson’s 30-point mark. His performance also stood as the third-highest scoring debut in NBA history, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain’s 43 points in 1959 and Frank Selvy’s 35 in 1954. He even broke LeBron James' record for points in a single quarter during a debut, scoring 14.
By the 2025-26 season, Edgecombe had established himself as a postseason force. During the Eastern Conference opening series, he set a new NBA record as the youngest person to post 30 points and 10 rebounds during the playoffs, a rookie milestone not reached since 1998's Tim Duncan. After earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team, he ended his debut season ranked third for Rookie of the Year, trailing Kon Knueppel and Cooper Flagg.
