The only athlete to hold professional titles in three distinct combat sports
In short: Valentina Shevchenko is a rare sporting anomaly. While most elite fighters specialize, she has secured professional championships in Muay Thai, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts. This triple-threat mastery propelled her to become the first Kyrgyz fighter to ever win a UFC championship.
Born in 1988 in Frunze (now Bishkek) during the Soviet era, Shevchenko’s path was shaped by a military lineage and early exposure to martial arts. Her mother, Elena, is a multi-time Muay Thai champion and current president of Kyrgyzstan's national association. Valentina began training in Taekwondo at age five before transitioning to Muay Thai kickboxing and freestyle Vale Tudo at 12. By the time she was 12 years old, she had already earned the nickname "Bullet" for her striking speed after knocking out a 22-year-old opponent.
Her career is defined by extreme versatility and longevity. Between 2003 and 2015, she amassed over 90 amateur and professional wins across K-1, Muay Thai, and kickboxing. She notably won eight gold medals at the IFMA world championships, defeating future UFC champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk three times during that period. After a hiatus to focus on striking, she returned to MMA in 2013, eventually making her UFC debut in 2016. Her journey included high-stakes battles against legends like Amanda Nunes and Holly Holm before she moved into the flyweight division.
Shevchenko’s reign as a champion is one of the most storied in the UFC. She captured the vacant Women's Flyweight title in December 2018 by defeating Jędrzejczyk. Her tenure was marked by a series of dominant defenses, including a head kick knockout against Jessica Eye and a TKO over Jéssica Andrade. Despite a surprising submission loss to Alexa Grasso in March 2023, she reclaimed her status as the only two-time UFC Women's Flyweight Champion following a dominant victory over Grasso in September 2024.
