In short: Virbhadra Singh navigated India's transition from princely states to modern democracy, serving six terms as Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. Known as Raja Sahib, he balanced a legacy rooted in the royal family of Bushahr with a career as a prominent leader in the Indian National Congress party.

Born in 1934 into the royal Rajput family of the former princely state of Bushahr, Virbhadra Singh held the title of 122nd titular Raja until 1971. That year, the 26th Amendment to the Indian Constitution abolished the privy purses and official recognition of such titles. Despite this shift, Singh maintained significant political influence, serving nine terms in the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly and five terms in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's Parliament.

His career was defined by his tenure as Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, a position he held for a record six terms. His first appointment occurred in 1983, and he remained a central figure in state politics until his final term ended in 2017. Beyond state governance, he held several national cabinet posts, including Minister for Steel and Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, serving under prime ministers Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh.

Singh's political life was marked by persistent legal challenges. In 2009, he faced allegations related to the Prevention of Corruption Act, though he was acquitted in 2012. Later, in 2015, the Central Bureau of Investigation initiated a probe into assets allegedly disproportionate to his known income during his time as a union minister. These legal battles, involving his wife and children, remained a recurring backdrop to his later years in public office.

Following a second COVID-19 infection in 2021, Singh suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away in July of that year. His death prompted three days of state mourning in Himachal Pradesh, reflecting his long-standing impact on the region's political landscape. He was cremated with full state honours in Rampur Bushahr, marking the end of a career that bridged the era of traditional princely authority and contemporary democratic governance.
