In short: Founded in 1984 as Kwantum–Decosol, this professional cycling squad has navigated a volatile landscape of shifting sponsorships and identity changes. From the Rabobank era to its current iteration as Visma–Lease a Bike, the team has evolved from a collection of individual specialists into a dominant force in Grand Tour racing.

The team traces its origins to the 1984 season, emerging from the remnants of the TI–Raleigh squad under the guidance of Jan Raas. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the organization cycled through numerous title sponsors, including Superconfex, Buckler, and WordPerfect. This period was marked by fluctuating fortunes; while the team celebrated successes like Jean-Paul van Poppel’s points classification win in the 1987 Tour de France, it also endured lean years, such as 1992, when victory counts plummeted compared to the team's peak performance in 1988.

The team’s most significant era began in 1996 with the arrival of Rabobank, a Dutch association of credit unions. This partnership lasted until 2012, when the sponsor withdrew following a USADA report that highlighted systemic doping issues within professional cycling. Despite this turmoil, the team persisted as a 'white label' entity under the name Blanco before securing a series of short-term backers, including Belkin and the Dutch lottery, Lotto. The subsequent integration of supermarket chain Jumbo and later the Norwegian software company Visma marked a transition toward modern, data-driven dominance.

In recent years, the team has achieved unprecedented success. In 2023, it became the first in history to win all three Grand Tours—the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia, and the Vuelta a España—in a single calendar year. This transformation from a collection of classic specialists into a Grand Tour powerhouse reflects a broader shift in the team's strategic focus. Today, the organization operates as a multi-faceted structure, encompassing a WorldTeam, a women’s team, a development team, and a dedicated cyclo-cross program, ensuring its continued relevance in the elite cycling world.
