How a small Los Angeles groceteria became a major supermarket powerhouse through aggressive expansion
In short: Starting as a modest 20-foot wide store in 1906, Vons evolved into a dominant Southern California retail force. Its journey involved landmark antitrust battles, pioneering self-service models, and a complex web of corporate acquisitions that eventually linked the brand to the national Albertsons supermarket empire.
The history of Vons began in 1906 when Charles Von der Ahe opened Von's Groceteria in downtown Los Angeles. By 1928, the operation had expanded to 87 locations before being sold to MacMarr Stores, which was subsequently absorbed by Safeway in 1930. However, the Von der Ahe family re-entered the industry in 1932, establishing the Von's Grocery Company. The chain gained national attention in 1948 for introducing a pioneering self-service model that featured pre-packaged produce, meat, and deli items, setting a new standard for grocery retail.
Growth was not without legal friction. In 1960, Vons acquired its competitor, Shopping Bag, a move that prompted the Federal Trade Commission to file an antitrust challenge. The case reached the United States Supreme Court in 1966, which ruled against Vons in United States v. Von's Grocery Co., forcing the company to divest the acquired stores. Despite this setback, the company continued to evolve, launching the upscale Pavilions brand in 1985 to cater to consumers seeking specialty goods, pharmacies, and expanded service areas.
The corporate structure of Vons underwent significant shifts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. After being spun off by Household Finance Corporation in 1986, the company was eventually acquired by Safeway in 1997. In 2014, Cerberus Capital Management purchased Safeway, leading to a massive consolidation with Albertsons. This merger forced the divestiture of nearly 200 stores to satisfy federal competition requirements. Today, Vons remains a prominent fixture in Southern California and the Las Vegas Valley, operating under the umbrella of Albertsons.
