In short: From a 1931 merger of two local grocery chains to a $1.65 billion acquisition target, Giant Eagle has transformed the American supermarket. The company has navigated the Great Depression, expanded through aggressive acquisitions, and is now poised to join the Kroger family in a major industry shift.

The roots of Giant Eagle trace back to the post-World War I era, when three Pittsburgh families—the Goldsteins, Porters, and Chaits—established Eagle Grocery. After a brief hiatus from the industry, Eagle Grocery merged with Kroger in 1928. The foundation of the modern giant was laid in 1931 when Eagle Grocery merged with OK Grocery, a chain built by the Moravitz and Weizenbaum families.

Throughout the 20th century, the company expanded its footprint through strategic acquisitions, such as the 1997 purchase of Riser Foods for $403 million and the 2006 acquisition of 18 stores from Tops. By the 1980s, the chain moved beyond western Pennsylvania by acquiring the Youngstown-based Tamarkin Company. This growth allowed Giant Eagle to become a dominant force in markets like Northeast Ohio and the Columbus region, where it capitalized on the decline of the Big Bear supermarket chain.

In recent years, the company has undergone significant structural shifts. In 2023, for the first time in its history, leadership transitioned away from the founding families, with Bart Friedman becoming chairman and Bill Artman as CEO. The company also pivoted its business model by selling its GetGo fuel station and convenience store portfolio to Alimentation Couche-Tard in 2025. This capital was redirected toward expanding its pharmacy business, particularly as it moved to capture market share following the liquidation of Rite Aid.

The company's scale is immense: as of summer 2025, it operated 211 supermarkets and 8 standalone pharmacies. In 2021, Forbes recognized it as the 36th-largest privately held company. The era of independence may be ending, however, as Kroger announced its intention to acquire Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion on July 1, 2026, a deal expected to close in 2027.
