In short: Named for the native word for spring of water, this Florida panhandle county is a landscape of protected forests, salt marshes, and seagrass beds. It houses one of the world's largest freshwater springs, a site so clear that early explorers described the sensation of floating as being suspended in air.

Located in the Big Bend region of Florida, Wakulla County is defined by its vast, protected natural spaces. The county is home to the Apalachicola National Forest, the largest in the state at over 571,000 acres, and the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, which spans 80,000 acres and includes 43 miles of Gulf Coast. These areas provide critical habitats for diverse wildlife, including the American alligator, Florida black bear, and bald eagles.

The region's most iconic feature is the first-magnitude Wakulla Springs. This springhead serves as the primary source for the Wakulla River and is a significant archaeological site where fossilized remains of mammoths, mastodons, and saber-tooth tigers have been discovered. The water is famously clear, with a 19th-century account noting that the spring's clarity allows observers to see objects on the bottom even in the deepest sections. While the name Wakulla is widely believed to mean spring of water, some theories suggest it may translate to mysterious water or mist, potentially referencing a 19th-century phenomenon known as the Wakulla Volcano, where smoke appeared to rise from the swamp.

The county's history is deeply tied to the St. Marks River. The St. Marks Lighthouse, built in 1830, served as a vital way marker until it was retired in 2014. The area also saw the rise and fall of Port Leon, which was once a major cotton-shipping hub and the sixth-largest town in Florida before a hurricane destroyed it. Today, the county remains a hub for outdoor exploration, featuring the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail, the longest designated national recreation trail in the United States.
