In short: Nestled where two rivers merge to form the Red River of the North, Wahpeton, North Dakota, has evolved from a frontier settlement into a manufacturing center. From its origins as a homesteading community to its role in regional power and education, this city offers a unique glimpse into the American Midwest.

Founded in 1869, Wahpeton sits at the meeting point of the Bois de Sioux and Otter Tail Rivers. The area was first mapped by explorer Jonathan Carver in 1767, though it was not until the arrival of the railroad in 1872 that the settlement began to grow rapidly. Early settlers, including the town's first resident Morgan T. Rich, were drawn by the fertile soil of the river valley. By 1883, the population had reached approximately 1,400, and the town soon became a regional leader in infrastructure, becoming one of the first cities in North Dakota to be electrified in 1888.

The city's identity is deeply tied to its history and its people. Originally named Richville, it was later renamed Chahinkapa, a Lakota term for the edge of the woods, before finally adopting the name Wahpeton, which translates to leaf dwellers in the Dakota language. This name honors the local band of Dakota Indians who once lived near Lake Mille Lacs. The city also served as the site of the Wahpeton Indian School, established in 1904 to assimilate Native American children, which now operates as the Circle of Nations School under tribal leadership.

Today, Wahpeton serves as the county seat of Richland County and remains a significant economic player. It is home to the North Dakota State College of Science and hosts several large manufacturing facilities, including operations for companies like Doosan/Bobcat and the Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative. With a population estimated at 8,141 in 2025, the city maintains a humid continental climate and continues to function as a vital hub for the surrounding agricultural region, balancing its historical roots with modern industrial development.
