In short: In the frozen ruins of post-apocalyptic Colorado, survival depends on a dangerous alliance. You lead a squad of Arizona Rangers forced to serve a local ruler known as the Patriarch. But as his heirs descend into civil war, you must decide: maintain the status quo or spark a revolution.

Wasteland 3 is a squad-based role-playing game developed by inXile Entertainment and released on August 28, 2020. The narrative centers on members of Arizona Ranger Team November who survived an ambush in the frozen Colorado wastes. To secure resources like food and water for their struggling organization, they are forced into a pact with the Patriarch. This ruler governs numerous settlements and scattered populations, but his authority is being challenged by his three heirs, who have begun fighting one another to seize his power.

The core tension of the game arises from the moral ambiguity of this alliance. While the Rangers initially seek the Patriarch's support to keep order, they soon discover the extent of his brutality. The narrative takes a pivotal turn when Angela Deth, a recurring character from previous entries in the series, contacts the players to organize a rebellion. This creates a significant branching path: the player must choose between honoring the original bargain with the tyrant or attempting to liberate Colorado, an act that carries the risk of endangering the future of Arizona.

The production of this title was marked by significant scaling and logistical hurdles. Developed using the Unity engine, the game's budget was three times larger than its predecessor, Wasteland 2. This increased funding was primarily directed toward high-quality conversational scenes and hiring professional voice actors. The project also faced delays due to a corporate acquisition by Xbox Game Studios and the challenges of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these hurdles, the game reached over 2 million players by December 2021.

Beyond its mechanics, the game explores the concept of cultural decay through its soundtrack. Music supervisor Mary Ramos worked with composer Mark Morgan to create a score that reflects a future where civilizations might lose the context of past media. The audio features post-apocalyptic versions of American anthems, bible hymns, and pop hits like Wang Chung's 'Everybody Have Fun Tonight,' suggesting a world where old cultural artifacts survive as hollowed-out echoes of their former meanings.
