In short: Limbus Company is a dark, hyper-capitalist role-playing game set in a sprawling city of twenty-six districts. Players manage a team of thirteen Sinners, led by an amnesiac named Dante, as they navigate trauma and combat to recover powerful artifacts known as Golden Boughs following the collapse of a megacorporation.

The game takes place in a dystopian city-state governed by megacorporations called Wings, each defined by unique technologies known as Singularities. These corporations maintain order through the Head, a conglomerate of A, B, and C Corps that enforces universal taboos. The city is physically divided into Nests, which are urban residences supported by the Corps, and the Backstreets, lawless areas plagued by poverty and criminal Syndicates. Within this setting, individuals known as Fixers work as contractors, graded by skill from nine down to one, with elite Color Fixers standing above the rest.

Combat in Limbus Company centers on a complex system of clashes, sanity, and skill management. Players direct Sinners to engage enemies, using skill icons to form chains and activate Resonance. Success in battle often depends on managing Sanity Points, which influence luck during coin flips, and utilizing E.G.O. skills—supernatural manifestations of a person's refusal to succumb to the Distortion phenomenon. This phenomenon occurs when individuals, overwhelmed by intense emotion, listen to the voice of a woman named Carmen and transform into monsters.

The narrative unfolds through character-driven chapters called Cantos, which delve into the Sinners' pasts. The game features a gacha system called Extraction, allowing players to acquire new Identities and E.G.O. equipment using in-game currency or tickets. Since its worldwide release on February 26, 2023, the game has expanded its lore, building upon the foundations of previous Project Moon titles like Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina. It maintains a distinct atmosphere through its soundtrack, featuring contributions from the group Mili, and concludes every Canto with the Sinners performing a rendition of the song 'Pass On'.
