In short: In 1998, Gregory Nava released a film exploring the tragic, fragmented life of Frankie Lymon. Through a series of flashbacks, the story follows three different women as they fight for the rights to the estate of the man who once led the pioneering group The Teenagers.

The film Why Do Fools Fall in Love is a biographical drama that uses a courtroom setting to weave together the life of Frankie Lymon with the competing claims of three women. The narrative jumps between the 1950s–1960s and the 1980s, tracing the rise and fall of Lymon, who achieved massive fame at age 13 with the 1956 hit "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?". The characters involved in the legal dispute include Zola Taylor, a member of The Platters; Elizabeth Waters, a thief from Philadelphia; and Emira Eagle, a schoolteacher from Augusta, Georgia. Ultimately, the film concludes with Emira winning the estate.

Lymon's real-life trajectory was marked by early brilliance and rapid decline. Following the success of his group and his 1957 solo work in Mr. Rock and Roll, his career largely ended by the age of 18. His life ended seven years later due to a heroin overdose. The film attempts to balance this tragedy with comedy, a feat that drew polarized reviews. While critic Peter Stack praised the film's ability to be entertaining and warm, the renowned Roger Ebert found the direction and screenplay disappointing, noting a lack of emotional investment in the verdict.

The production itself was a long-term endeavor, with screenwriter Tina Andrews spending 15 years developing the script. The film's soundtrack also served as a bridge between eras, featuring both vintage recordings from artists like Little Richard and Otis Redding, alongside contemporary R&B tracks produced by Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott and Timbaland. This musical blend included hits like "I Want You Back" by Melanie Brown, which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart.
