In short: Ever wonder why your internet slows down in a packed mall or office? It isn't just about speed; it is about efficiency. Wi-Fi 6 uses sophisticated multiplexing to manage multiple devices simultaneously, dramatically increasing throughput and slashing latency in the most congested environments.

While previous generations focused primarily on raw speed, Wi-Fi 6 (IEEE 802.11ax) was engineered to handle the density of modern life. While its nominal data rate is only 37% higher than Wi-Fi 5 (IEEE 802.11ac), its real power lies in efficiency. In crowded settings, Wi-Fi 6 can increase overall throughput by at least four times and reduce latency by 75%. This standard was officially endorsed by the IEEE Standards Board in early 2021. It represents a significant upgrade from the previous 802.11ac protocol.

A core mechanism behind this leap is Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access, or OFDMA. Similar to cellular networks, OFDMA allows a single channel to be split into multiple Resource Units. This means an 80 MHz channel can serve different clients with different data types simultaneously, rather than making them wait in line. This method relies on higher spectral efficiency to achieve such results. It ensures that multiple users can receive their data at the same time.

To support this, the standard utilizes four times as many subcarriers as its predecessor. For example, a 20 MHz channel uses 256 subcarriers in Wi-Fi 6, compared to 64 in Wi-Fi 5. This increase in subcarriers reduces subcarrier spacing, resulting in longer OFDM symbols—increasing from 3.2 microseconds in Wi-Fi 5 to 12.8 microseconds in Wi-Fi 6. This change is possible because the standard uses more subcarriers to manage the signal. This approach helps to improve overall reliability for connected devices.

The standard operates across the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, with the Wi-Fi 6E extension adding the 6 GHz band. This broader range offers increased space for 160 MHz high-bandwidth channels, bypassing the Dynamic Frequency Selection limitations found within the 5 GHz band. The availability of these channels depends on the specific country where the network is being used. This ensures the technology adheres to local regulations.
