In short: India's sixth longest expressway isn't just a road; it is a high-speed corridor designed to bypass the gridlock of ancient trade routes. By connecting Greater Noida to Agra, it reshaped regional logistics and real estate, even serving as a runway for military aircraft during emergency drills.

In April 2001, planners proposed the Yamuna Expressway to ease pressure on NH-2 (the Delhi–Agra national highway), a route traversing crowded urban centres including Palwal and Faridabad. Spanning 165.5 km, this access-controlled concrete expressway was built on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis by Jaypee Infratech Ltd. Under this agreement, the company holds rights to collect tolls for 36 years starting from its August 9, 2012, Commercial Operations Date, after which ownership transfers to the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). The project faced significant hurdles, including a two-year construction delay and farmer protests in 2011. Despite these challenges, it achieved a massive reduction in travel time between Greater Noida and Agra from four hours to just one hour and 40 minutes.

To maintain safety at high speeds—where the limit is 100 km/h for cars and 60 km/h for heavy vehicles—the route features CCTV cameras every 5 km, mobile radars, and a highway patrol station at Tappal, located 60 km from Noida Sector 37. Beyond transit, the expressway acts as an economic engine. It serves as a primary connection to the Noida International Airport at Jewar and facilitates the development of approximately 25,000 hectares of land. The authority has even launched affordable housing schemes to stimulate the real estate market along the route. In a notable first for Indian military aviation, the expressway was also tested in May 2015 as an emergency landing strip for a French Dassault Mirage 2000 aircraft.

The infrastructure is part of a larger network intended to link commercial zones on the eastern side of the Yamuna River. It connects to the Agra–Lucknow Expressway via the Agra Inner Ring Road, creating a fast transit corridor that allows tourists to reach the Taj Mahal while bypassing heavy city traffic.
