In short: To manage a network spanning over 92,000 kilometers, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) relies on massive infrastructure projects and satellite mapping. From world-record construction speeds to ambitious green corridors, it serves as the backbone of India's modern connectivity.

Established as an autonomous body in 1995 under the 1988 Act, the NHAI is the nodal agency for India's road network. It manages over 50,000 km of National highways out of a total of 132,499 km across the country. To maintain this vast scale, the agency has partnered with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to utilize satellite mapping for highway oversight.

The authority operates through the National Highways Development Project (NHDP), which is divided into several distinct phases. These range from Phase I's Golden Quadrilateral—a 5,846 km network connecting major hubs like Delhi and Mumbai—to more recent initiatives like Phase VI, which focuses on developing 1,000 km of expressways. The agency also manages toll collection and has set significant benchmarks, such as a Guinness World Record in June 2022 for constructing 75 km of highway between Amravati and Akola in only five days.

Beyond physical construction, the NHAI is navigating complex environmental and integrity challenges. Since 2015, it has promoted 'Green Highways' to develop eco-friendly corridors through roadside plantations, aiming to create 100,000 direct jobs over a decade. However, the agency has faced scrutiny; a 2012 World Bank report alleged fraudulent practices and bribery involving contractors on highway projects. To modernize, the government also rationalized road numbering in 2010, using odd numbers for east-west routes and even numbers for north-south routes.
