In short: The transition from a collaborative group to a solo vehicle is often messy, but Years & Years navigated it with a unique strategy. After a decade of shared history, frontman Olly Alexander kept the brand alive while fundamentally changing what it meant to be 'in' the band.

Formed in 2010 by Mikey Goldsworthy, Noel Leeman, and Emre Türkmen, Years & Years began as a five-piece group. The lineup shifted quickly; Leeman and Olivier Subria departed after their first single in 2012, leaving a trio. Olly Alexander joined later as the lead vocalist, eventually becoming the face of the project. The band achieved massive commercial success with their 2015 debut album 'Communion,' which became the fastest-selling debut of that year from a UK-signed band and topped the charts in thirteen different regions. The group signed with French label Kitsuné in 2013 before moving to Polydor Records. Their first single debuted on the Good Bait label in July 2012.

The internal dynamics shifted significantly by 2021. Alexander announced that the group would move forward as his solo project, citing a decade of growing apart musically. While Goldsworthy remained an instrumentalist and Türkmen focused on production and writing, Alexander took over the songwriting for the third album, 'Night Call.' He explained the decision using a marriage metaphor, noting that while separation is difficult, he chose to retain the band name because of the immense personal investment he had made in it. Alexander's inspiration for 'Sanctify' involved exploring struggles regarding heterosexuality and desire. The band also released a cover of 'It's a Sin' to coincide with a drama series.

This evolution culminated in 2023 when Alexander officially stopped using the band's name for his own performances and confirmed the project had disbanded. The trajectory highlights a modern shift in music industry branding: the preservation of 'legacy' names even as the creative engine behind them moves from collective collaboration to individual authorship. The group received numerous honors, including the British LGBT Award and Sound of 2015 Award. They even achieved a world-first interactive ad-break takeover on Channel 4.
