In short: Formed in 1990, the York-based band Shed Seven spent decades navigating the volatile music industry. After a 2003 split and a 2007 reunion, they defied their early commercial struggles. By 2024, the group finally secured their first number one album, followed immediately by a second within the same calendar year.

Shed Seven emerged from the remnants of a band called Brockley Haven, officially forming in 1990. Throughout the 1990s, they became a staple of the British alternative rock scene, securing fifteen top 40 singles and five top 40 albums. Despite this consistent chart presence, the band faced significant friction with record labels, including Polydor and Taste Media. These disputes often centered on creative control, such as the label's insistence on releasing a greatest hits compilation in 1999 that the band felt was premature, and Taste Media's refusal to release a completed fifth studio album in 2003.

The band's frustration culminated in a 2003 farewell tour, but their story did not end there. They reunited for a successful tour in 2007, which Paul Banks described as the biggest they had ever undertaken. This period marked a shift in their trajectory, as they moved beyond the constraints of their early label relationships. The band continued to perform live and release music, eventually finding a new creative stride that led to unprecedented chart success decades after their inception.

In 2024, the band reached a career milestone. On 5 January, they released A Matter of Time, which became their first-ever number one album on the official UK charts. Later that year, on 27 September, they released Liquid Gold, a collection of re-imagined and re-recorded versions of their songs. This album also debuted at number one, marking a rare achievement for any artist: two number one albums within the same year. This late-career resurgence highlights the band's endurance and their ability to maintain a loyal following, often referred to as 'Shed Heads', long after their initial rise to prominence.
