The myth of the rooftop: where 'Your Song' was actually written

In short: A popular legend claims the lyrics to Elton John's masterpiece were scribbled on a London rooftop. But the truth behind the song's creation is far more domestic, involving a kitchen table, a breakfast setting, and a suburban apartment in Northwood Hills.

The origins of 'Your Song' are often shrouded in a romanticized urban myth. Many believe lyricist Bernie Taupin composed the words while sitting on a roof at 20 Denmark Street in London—the very building where Elton John once worked as an office boy. This narrative is reinforced by the song's own lyrics, which mention sitting on a roof and kicking off the moss.

However, Taupin has explicitly debunked this rooftop theory. He clarifies that the lyrics were actually scribbled onto a lined notepad at a kitchen table in Elton John's mother's apartment, located in the London suburb of Northwood Hills. This creative session took place during breakfast sometime in 1969. The music itself was composed by John on Monday, 27 October 1969.

The track, performed by Elton John and written with Taupin, became his first international Top 10 hit. By January 1971, the track had climbed to number eight on the US Billboard chart and number seven on the UK singles chart. The song's enduring legacy is reflected in its various accolades, including an induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and its inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of 500 songs that shaped the genre.

Beyond its chart success, the song has become a staple of pop culture, covered by artists ranging from Lady Gaga and Rod Stewart to Ellie Goulding. Its melodic strength is so significant that John Lennon once remarked that the song felt like the first new thing to happen in music since the arrival of The Beatles.
