The English farm boy who became the architect of Elton John's greatest hits
In short: Bernie Taupin grew up in rural Lincolnshire without electricity, yet his lyrics defined the sound of global pop. After answering a 1967 newspaper advertisement, he formed a songwriting partnership with Elton John that has spanned decades, producing iconic anthems while maintaining a unique, hands-off creative process.
Born in 1950 at Flatters House, a farmhouse lacking electricity, Bernie Taupin’s early life was defined by the rural landscapes of Lincolnshire. His upbringing, marked by moves to run-down properties like Maltkiln Farm, provided the backdrop for his early creative development. Influenced by his mother’s love of literature and his grandfather’s appreciation for narrative poetry, Taupin developed a flair for writing that eventually led him away from a brief stint at the Lincolnshire Standard newspaper.
In 1967, a pivotal moment occurred when both Taupin and Elton John responded to an advertisement placed by Liberty Records. Although neither passed the audition, an A&R man handed John a sealed envelope of Taupin’s lyrics. This chance encounter sparked a partnership that has lasted over thirty years, characterized by a distinct method: Taupin writes lyrics in isolation, and John composes music to them without further interaction. This process produced hits ranging from 'Your Song' to 'Candle in the Wind'.
Beyond his collaboration with John, Taupin has led a diverse career as a visual artist, author, and even a part-owner of a champion bucking bull. He moved to the United States in the mid-1970s and became a citizen in 1990. His contributions to music have been widely recognized, including an Oscar for ' (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again' in 2020, an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, and the Gershwin Prize in 2024. Today, he continues to influence the cultural landscape from his home in Santa Barbara County, California.
