In short: In 1851, a group of miners established a boomtown in the Shasta Valley. They didn't choose a name based on geography or history, but rather through a linguistic accident involving a drying canvas sign and a very confused stranger.

The origins of Yreka are rooted in the California Gold Rush. In March 1851, a mule train packer named Abraham Thompson discovered gold near Rocky Gulseb, traveling along the Siskiyou Trail. By June 1851, the area had transformed from 'Thompson's Dry Diggings' into a bustling camp of tents and shanties. While the name 'Yreka' is derived from the Shasta word *wáik'a*, meaning 'north mountain' or 'white mountain'—referring to nearby Mount Shasta—the town's specific adoption of the name was far more haphazard.

According to accounts, a local bakeshop had a canvas sign that was left to dry. The word 'BAKERY' was painted on the canvas, but because it was stretched and reversed, only the letters 'AKERY' were clearly visible, missing the 'B'. A stranger reading the sign end-first misread the letters as 'YREKA'. The miners, satisfied with this accidental moniker, adopted it for the settlement.

Beyond its linguistic quirks, Yreka has a complex history marked by both civic development and violence. The city was incorporated on April 21, 1857. Its past includes documented instances of vigilante justice, such as the 1895 lynching of four men awaiting trial, and a 1935 incident where a mob from Dunsmuir traveled to the Yreka jail to lynch a robbery suspect. Today, the city remains a hub for Siskiyou County, situated at an elevation of approximately 2,500 feet near the Shasta River.
