From political companion to leader of the Russian opposition in exile
In short: Once described as the 'first lady' of the Russian opposition, Yulia Navalnaya has transitioned from a supportive spouse to a central political figure. Following the death of her husband, Alexei Navalny, she has taken up his mantle, leading his foundation and vowing to continue his fight for a free Russia.
Yulia Navalnaya's political trajectory shifted significantly following the 2020 Novichok poisoning of her husband, Alexei Navalny. While she previously focused on his daily life and raised their two children, Daria and Zakhar, the crisis forced her into the international spotlight. She successfully demanded his medical transfer to Germany, a move that cemented her role as a key advocate for his survival and a prominent voice against the Russian state. Her public visibility grew after she spoke out against Russian officials during her husband's medical crisis. She even directly appealed to President Vladimir Putin for assistance during that period.
Since Alexei Navalny's death in the IK-3 penal colony on 16 February 2024, Navalnaya has assumed leadership of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, which he established in 2011. Her role has expanded from being a devoted companion to a political leader in exile. In 2024, she was named by Time as one of the 100 most influential persons and was a nominee for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. Beyond her work with the Anti-Corruption Foundation, she also serves as the chairperson for the Human Rights Foundation. This role was previously held by the renowned chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov.
The Russian government has responded to her activism with legal measures. On 9 July 2024, the Basmanny District Court ordered her arrest for participating in an 'extremist community,' and she was subsequently added to Russia's official list of terrorists and extremists. Despite these pressures, Navalnaya has remained vocal, accusing the Kremlin of orchestrating her husband's death and stating her intention to run for president once Vladimir Putin is no longer in power. Her political ambitions include a potential presidential candidacy once the current regime ends. She has expressed a firm desire to see the leadership held accountable for their actions.
