In short: In 2013, a teenager from Stockholm went viral with a single track. Since then, the Swedish rapper known as Yung Lean has navigated addiction, international tours, and a complete genre shift, evolving from a pioneer of cloud rap into a versatile artist spanning indie rock and neoframing.

Jonatan Aron Leandoer Håstad, known professionally as Yung Lean, first captured the internet's attention in 2013. His track "Ginseng Strip 2002" became a YouTube sensation, propelling his debut mixtape, *Unknown Death 2002*, into the spotlight. Alongside producers Yung Gud and Yung Sherman, Håstad formed the Sad Boys collective, establishing a sound that critics described as the epitome of "sad rap." His early musical influences included 50 Cent, Nas, and The Latin Kings. Before his global fame, he even worked a local job at McDonald's.

His career has been marked by both immense achievement and profound personal struggle. While he achieved mainstream recognition—including a feature on Frank Ocean's *Blonde* and a 2025 performance for 10,330 people at Stockholm's Avicii Arena—he also faced severe health crises. During the recording of his album *Warlord*, Håstad lived in Miami Beach, where he struggled with addiction to substances including cocaine and Xanax. A life-threatening overdose in April 2015 led to his hospitalization at Mount Sinai Medical Center, an event that coincided with the death of his manager, Barron Machat. The artist's family history is equally international, with a father who is a Swedish poet and a mother who served as an ambassador to Albania. His childhood also included time spent living in Belarus.

Beyond hip-hop, Håstad has demonstrated significant artistic range. Under the pseudonym Jonatan Leandoer96, he released albums like *Nectar* and *Blodhundar & Lullabies*, which move away from his rap roots toward indie rock and neofolk. His creative interests also extend to film writing, ceramics, and painting—a hobby he adopted to manage his bipolar disorder, which he was diagnosed with in 2017. Today, he operates through his own label, World Affairs. His recent work includes a collaboration with Travis Scott on the track "Parasail." He is also set to make his film debut in the upcoming production titled Sacrifice.
