How a pianist turned a hiking trip into a global peace project
In short: While hiking in New Hampshire, Jordanian-American pianist Zade Dirani conceived a vision to use music as a tool for diplomacy. What began as a personal idea evolved into a massive collaboration involving 40 musicians from 18 different countries, many from war-torn regions, to build trust through shared performance.
Zade Dirani's career is defined by the intersection of high art and humanitarian advocacy. Amman's architecture-focused household welcomed Dirani in 1980, before he pursued music education at Boston's Berklee College of Music and the National Music Conservatory in Amman. His musical style is a deliberate blend of Middle Eastern, Lebanese, and pop influences with classical structures. This fusion has allowed his work to reach diverse audiences, with his albums appearing on the US Billboard charts and his 'One Night in Jordan' project debuting at #2 on the New Age Chart.
His commitment to cross-cultural understanding became formalized in 2005 with the launch of The Zade Foundation for International Peace and Understanding. This initiative seeks to transform musicians into proactive peace builders. A primary example of this is the 'Roads to You' project, which showcased musicians from conflict zones working in an atmosphere of trust. This vision extended to 'One Night in Jordan,' an unprecedented concert at one of the world's oldest Roman Amphitheaters, featuring over 90 elite musicians from more than 40 nations, including the London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Beyond performance, Dirani translates these concepts into tangible social programs. As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, he helped launch 'Musiqati' (My Music), the world's first music therapy program specifically for children in refugee camps. Piloted in the Azraq Refugee Camp for over 4,000 children, the program showed that 65 percent of participants made significant progress in social skills and self-expression. His work emphasizes that music requires honesty, a philosophy he applies to both his compositions and his advocacy for children caught in violence and poverty.
