From Swiss youth product to a European goal-scoring sensation
In short: Zeki Amdouni’s rise in professional football is defined by rapid adaptation and clinical finishing across multiple leagues. In just one season with Basel, he became a joint top scorer in a major European competition, showcasing a versatile attacking profile that has seen him move from the Swiss Super League to the Premier League.
Born in 2000 to a Turkish father and Tunisian mother, Amdouni developed through the youth systems of Servette, Meyrin, and Étoile Carouge. He began his professional journey in the fourth tier of the Swiss league system with Étoile Carouge before moving up to Stade Lausanne Ouchy in 2019. His breakthrough came at Lausanne-Sport in 2021; despite the club's relegation at the end of the 2021–22 season, Amdouni established himself as a standout performer by scoring 12 goals.
His career trajectory accelerated significantly during his tenure with Basel. Joining on loan in June 2022, he quickly became a focal point of their attack. During the 2022–23 UEFA Europa Conference League run, Amdouni displayed remarkable efficiency, netting seven goals in just eight outings. This performance earned him the title of joint top goal scorer for the competition alongside Arthur Cabral of Fiorentina. He played 58 games for Basel during this period, contributing 25 total goals across domestic and European fixtures.
Amdouni's international career is marked by a unique path regarding his eligibility. While he represented Switzerland at the U20 level, he briefly switched to represent Turkey at the U21 level in May 2019 before returning to the Swiss setup that same month. He has since become a staple for the senior Switzerland national team, notably scoring six goals in ten appearances during the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. His rapid progression continues as he moves between top-flight leagues in England and Portugal, including a recent loan to Benfica where he scored his first UEFA Champions League goal in November 2024.
His ability to produce results under pressure has earned him significant accolades, including being named the Swiss Super League Player of the Month in February 2023 and being selected for the Swiss Super League Team of the Year for 2022–23. He remains a key figure for Switzerland, having been selected for both the Euro 2024 finals and the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
