From disinfecting rooms to mirroring emotions, robots are moving beyond the lab

5 of the Most Important Inventions in Robotics · 12:28 · Video: SciShow · Watch at the source

In short: While viral videos make robotic movement look easy, replicating human behavior is incredibly difficult. From specialized medical tools to social companions, modern robotics is migrating from research labs into our daily lives, tackling everything from biological outbreaks to the complexities of human emotion.

The transition of robotics from controlled research environments to practical, real-world applications is accelerating. One specialized innovation is the Xenex "Saul" UV robot, which the U.S. Air Force has deployed to combat Ebola. By employing high-energy ultraviolet pulses, this device destroys Ebola virus cell walls inside quarantine zones, marking an early robotic intervention during biological crises. This deployment represents one of the initial instances where robotic technology was utilised to respond to a biological outbreak. Such advancements demonstrate how automation can provide critical support during medical emergencies.

In the realm of social and therapeutic robotics, machines are being designed to interact with human psychology. SoftBank's Pepper robot uses multi-directional microphones and 2D/3D cameras to analyze tone of voice and lexical fields. To mirror detected emotions like joy, sadness, or anger, Pepper regulates 20 embedded engines located in its head, back, and arms. Similarly, the Paro robot—a therapeutic machine shaped like a baby harp seal—uses five sensors (including tactile, light, posture, temperature, and audition) to reduce patient stress by leveraging the benefits of animal therapy.

The industry is also moving toward high-level integration and personalization. Asus Zenbo functions as an autonomous home robot that connects to smart-home systems like security cameras and door locks to assist with medication schedules and emergency detection. Concurrently, Google patented a system for service robots that can retrieve personalities from the cloud, enabling one unit to switch between various human-facing personas.
