Can a single blood test revolutionize how we detect and treat cancer?

In short: Many cancers remain silent, showing no symptoms until they reach an advanced stage. However, a new era of liquid biopsies is changing this, using tiny fragments of tumor DNA to fast-track treatments and potentially save lives by identifying cancer earlier than ever before.

Traditional cancer diagnosis often requires invasive tissue biopsies to confirm the presence of malignant cells. While blood tests like the Complete Blood Count (CBC) can identify blood cancers, or electrophoresis can detect proteins related to multiple myeloma, they are rarely used alone for a definitive diagnosis. This is because many healthy cells also produce certain chemicals, and non-cancerous conditions can trigger high levels of tumor markers, such as PSA for prostate cancer or CA 125 for ovarian cancer.

The landscape is shifting with the advent of 'liquid biopsies.' These tests look for circulating tumor cells or small fragments of tumor DNA within a blood sample. Unlike traditional tumor marker tests, which are often used post-diagnosis to monitor treatment efficacy, these genomic tests can identify the specific genetic variations of a tumor. This allows clinicians to tailor personalized, targeted therapies to the individual patient's needs.

The practical implications of this technology are already being realized. NHS England has become the first health service to roll out a 'blood test-first' approach for suspected lung cancer, potentially speeding up access to targeted therapy by up to two weeks. This shift could also help patients avoid intensive treatments like chemotherapy. Beyond lung and breast cancer, researchers are investigating the use of these tests for pancreatic and gallbladder cancers, aiming for a future where a single blood test can scan the body for developing malignancies.
