The rise and merger of a desktop publishing powerhouse
In short: For years, Affinity Publisher stood as a major challenger to industry giants by offering professional-grade layout tools without the subscription trap. Now, its journey from a standalone success story to a unified freemium model marks a significant shift in how creative software is packaged and sold.
First released on June 19, 2019, Affinity Publisher was developed by Serif as a successor to their PagePlus software, which had been discontinued in August 2017. It entered the market as part of a specialized suite alongside Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo. The application gained significant traction by positioning itself as an alternative to Adobe InDesign, offering essential professional features like master pages, OpenType support, linked text frames, and full CMYK color model support for both print and online media.
A key differentiator was the "StudioLink" integration. This allowed users to access the native vector and raster functionalities of Affinity Designer and Photo directly within Publisher if they were installed on the same device. Furthermore, Serif utilized a perpetual license model rather than a subscription, which was frequently cited in favorable reviews as a primary advantage over competitors. The software's impact was notable enough that Apple named it "Mac App of the Year" in December 2019.
The software underwent several iterative updates, including version 1.8 in February 2020, which added support for importing Adobe InDesign Markup Language (IDML) files—a feature missing at launch. By version 1.9 in February 2021, the company claimed speed improvements of up to 10 times for certain tasks. However, it faced criticism for lacking specific high-end features like GREP-based styles and footnotes.
The landscape shifted dramatically in 2024 when Canva purchased Serif. This led to a major transition: in October 2025, Affinity Publisher was officially discontinued. It has been replaced by the freemium "Affinity" application, which bundles layout, vector, and raster features into a single unified tool, ending the era of three separate desktop publishing products.
