The hidden logic of your DNA is a game of genetic alternatives

In short: You might have a gene for a specific trait, but that doesn't tell the whole story. The real magic lies in alleles—the different versions of those genes that determine how your biology actually expresses itself. It is the difference between having a blueprint and choosing which version to build.

The fundamental unit of heredity is the gene, but its expression depends on specific variations called alleles. These are defined as any one of two or more genes that can occur alternatively at a specific location, known as a locus, on a chromosome. While many people think of traits as simple 'on' or 'off' switches, an organism's genotype is actually the specific combination of these alleles it carries.

In most cases, alleles exist in pairs. When those two paired alleles are identical, the organism is described as homozygous for that trait; when they differ, it is heterozygous. The interaction between these pairs determines the phenotype, or physical expression. A dominant allele can override a recessive one in a heterozygous pairing, but nature also allows for codominance, where neither allele is dominant and both are expressed.

Complexity increases significantly when we look at systems like the human ABO blood group. In this system, individuals with type AB blood carry one allele for A and one for B, while those with type O carry neither. Furthermore, most traits are governed by more than two alleles or multiple gene sites simultaneously. Over time, these frequencies shift within a population due to mutations, crossing over, and environmental conditions. Ultimately, alleles that provide higher fitness—the ability to successfully reproduce—are the ones that persist, while less-fit versions gradually fade from the genetic record.
