The Amazon pumps 7 trillion tons of water into the atmosphere annually

Amazon Rainforest Secrets: Biodiversity & Threats · 33:18 · Video: Geodiode · Watch at the source

In short: The Amazon is not just a passive victim of climate change; it is a massive biological engine. By recycling a staggering portion of its own rainfall, the rainforest actively regulates the global climate, acting as a vital pump for the planet's water and carbon cycles.

The Amazon basin covers 2.6 million square miles, spanning eight countries and roughly 40% of South America. Despite occupying only 1% of the Earth's surface, it serves as the world's most biologically diverse region, housing 10% of all known wildlife species. The region hosts 370+ reptile varieties, 3,000 types of fish in freshwater, and 40,000 plant species. The sheer scale of life is so vast that a new species is discovered in the region every other day, with millions of species still undescribed by science.

The ecosystem functions through a complex recycling mechanism. The rainforest forests recycle between 50% and 75% of annual rainfall back into the atmosphere. This process is supported by the trees, which release approximately 20 billion tons of water into the air every day. Furthermore, the Amazon acts as a massive carbon sink, storing between 90 billion and 150 billion metric tons of carbon, which helps stabilize both local and global temperatures.

However, this biological engine is under severe pressure. A 69% reduction in precipitation has occurred throughout the woodland since 2000. By 2030, 27% of the Amazon biome might lack trees, according to WWF projections regarding ongoing logging. This loss threatens not only the 47 million people who live there—including 2.2 million Indigenous people—but also the survival of iconic species like the jaguar, more than 70% of which reside in this region.
