Why your smart home needs a 'Global State Number'
In short: In the complex web of smart home automation, how does a system know if a light is actually on? Apple Home uses a specific identifier called a Global State Number. Every time an accessory's state changes, this number increments, ensuring the system stays perfectly synced with reality.
Apple Home operates through the HomeKit software framework, which manages connected appliances using the HomeKit Accessory Protocol (HAP). To maintain synchronization across multiple devices, each category of accessory is assigned a specific code. Furthermore, every device identifies itself with a Global State Number (GSN). This number is not static; it increases every single time the state of an accessory is altered. This mechanism allows the system to track changes reliably as messages are continuously sent to powered devices.
The architecture has undergone significant evolution to balance compatibility and efficiency. While HomeKit originally required a dedicated encryption co-processor for all products, Apple transitioned to software-based authentication in iOS 11. To solve the problem of device fragmentation—where different brands often struggle to talk to one another—Apple collaborated with Samsung, Amazon, and Google to create Matter. This open standard, published on October 4, 2022, aims for universal interoperability across various IoT platforms.
Security remains a core pillar of the platform's design. Features like HomeKit Secure Routers (introduced in 2019) allow users to restrict unauthorized network access, while HomeKit Secure Video encrypts and stores camera footage in iCloud. However, there are hardware limitations: neither HomePods nor Apple TVs can unlock secure appliances like locks; these require direct authentication from an iPhone or iPad. As the platform matures, it is moving toward a more efficient architecture that phased out older support for devices running legacy operating systems by February 2026.
