The math suggests we are likely not the first advanced species

Are we alone in the universe? Where are all the aliens? Fermi Paradox Solutions & Drake Equation · 10:23 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: If life is common, why is the galaxy silent? While the Fermi Paradox highlights our lack of contact with aliens, new calculations using exoplanet data suggest that for us to be truly alone, the odds of developing technology would have to be cosmically infinitesimal.

The Fermi Paradox stems from a simple contradiction: given the billions of stars and potential planets in our galaxy, where is everyone? Physicist Enrico Fermi reasoned that any civilization capable of building self-replicating AI probes should have had millions of years to colonize the Milky Way. However, despite these possibilities, our instruments show no tell-tale signs of intelligent life or space-faring civilizations in our solar system or beyond.

To quantify this mystery, scientists use the Drake Equation, which breaks down variables like star formation rates, the fraction of planets that develop life, and the longevity of technological civilizations. While we lack precise data on how often life becomes 'super-intelligent,' recent research by Adam Frank and Sullivan provides a new perspective. By applying current exoplanet data to the universe's 2 x 10^22 stars, they established a 'pessimism line'—the threshold of probability required for humans to be unique.

The study reveals that human civilization would only be unique if the odds of a habitable planet developing an advanced technological species were less than one in 10 billion trillion (or 10^-22). Because this number is so incredibly small, the researchers argue it is far more likely that other technology-producing species have already evolved. This suggests that unless the leap from life to civilization is nearly impossible, we are likely not the first to reach this milestone.
