In short: While your phone relies on ARM, a specialized branch of this technology is quietly revolutionizing high-performance computing. The Neoverse series isn't just about mobile efficiency; it is a sophisticated suite of 64-bit cores engineered to handle the massive scale of modern cloud infrastructure and edge computing.

Arm Holdings licenses three distinct families of Neoverse processor cores, each tailored for specific computational demands. The V-Series focuses on high-performance computing (HPC), the N-Series targets core datacenter usage, and the E-Series is optimized for edge computing where maximizing data throughput while minimizing power consumption is critical. The evolution of these cores demonstrates a shift toward massive scalability. For instance, the Neoverse N1 microarchitecture, announced in February 2019, was specifically redesigned from the Cortex-A76 for infrastructure applications.

It features a mesh interconnect rather than traditional small clusters and supports reference designs with up to 128 cores. This architecture powered the Ampere Altra 80-core CPU and the AWS Graviton2 platform in 2020. Technological leaps are also visible in the V-Series progression.

The Neoverse V1 (Zeus), announced in September 2020, introduced SVE 2x256-bit support for HPC tasks. Its successor, the V2 (Demeter), launched in September 2022 and implements the ARMv9.0-A instruction set, powering high-profile chips like NVIDIA Grace and Google Axion. Looking forward, the Neoverse V3 (Poseidon) is being designed to integrate with next-generation standards like DDR5 memory and PCIe gen6. This tiered approach allows companies like Microsoft and Alibaba to customize their hardware. By using the Neoverse CSS N2—a customizable CPU subsystem announced in August 2023—manufacturers can reduce time to market while still utilizing Arm's high-performance designs for massive multi-core CPUs, such as the Azure Cobalt 100.
