The shift from boycott to bridge: Bahrain's pivot toward Israel
In short: In 2020, Bahrain became the fourth Arab state to recognize Israel, marking a seismic shift in Middle Eastern diplomacy. This wasn't a sudden whim; it was the culmination of years of escalating regional pressures, economic incentives, and a strategic realignment against shared adversaries.
The normalization of relations between Bahrain and Israel, finalized in September 2020, was a cornerstone of the Abraham Accords. While the agreement was a major diplomatic milestone, it was preceded by a long history of shifting stances. To secure a free trade pact with the United States, Bahrain ended its boycott of Israel by 2005.
The path toward the 2020 agreement was paved by growing concerns over Iran's influence in the region. The U.S. received public backing from Bahrain and various Gulf countries during 2018. the American exit from the Iranian nuclear treaty, due to Iran's disruptive actions. This shared security concern led to increased cooperation, including joint participation in security conferences in Poland in 2019 and the hosting of workshops on economic peace plans in Manama.
The agreement itself is nuanced. While it establishes full diplomatic ties—including the exchange of ambassadors and the opening of embassies—Bahrain's leadership has maintained a specific stance on the Palestinian issue. King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has explicitly stressed the need for a 'just and comprehensive peace' based on a two-state solution, even as the kingdom moves forward with cooperation in technology, health, and agriculture with Israel.
The geopolitical reaction remains deeply divided. While many Western nations and some Arab neighbors like Egypt and the UAE welcomed the move as a step toward stability, others viewed it as a betrayal. Iran and various Palestinian groups denounced the deal, characterizing it as a sacrifice of Palestinian rights for political and security gains.
