How to mathematically update your beliefs when new information arrives
In short: Bayes' Theorem is the fundamental logic of learning from experience. This video explains how to flip conditional probabilities to solve problems where one piece of data is easy to find, but the conclusion we actually want remains elusive.
The theorem provides a way to calculate P(A|B)—the probability of A occurring given that B has happened—by using the inverse relationship P(B|A). This is essential because, in many real-world scenarios, it is much simpler to determine the likelihood of an effect given a cause than vice versa.
By rearranging these probabilities, we can systematically update our confidence in a hypothesis as new evidence comes to light. It transforms probability from a static calculation into a dynamic process of refining our understanding of the world.
