Bernard Cazeneuve served the shortest prime ministerial term in France's Fifth Republic history
In short: Bernard Cazeneuve navigated the highest levels of French government, from managing national budgets to overseeing internal security during terror crises. A career politician and lawyer, his tenure as Prime Minister lasted just over five months, a record for brevity that stood until the appointment of Michel Barnier in 2024.
Born in 1963, Bernard Cazeneuve began his political ascent in the Socialist Party, eventually holding key ministerial roles under President François Hollande. His career was marked by significant administrative challenges, including his time as Minister of the Interior, where he directed the government's response to the 2015 Île-de-France attacks. During this period, he advocated for enhanced border security within the Schengen area and pushed for legislative measures to combat terrorism, including controversial proposals regarding internet surveillance.
Cazeneuve's transition to the premiership occurred in December 2016 after Manuel Valls resigned to pursue a presidential bid. His time at the head of the government was remarkably brief, spanning only five months and four days. This duration remained the shortest in the Fifth Republic until Michel Barnier’s 90-day term in 2024. Despite his short time in office, Cazeneuve remained a prominent figure in French politics, later breaking with the Socialist Party in 2022 over its alliance with the leftist La France Insoumise.
Beyond his executive roles, Cazeneuve maintained a career in law and authored several books, including an investigation into the 2002 Karachi bus bombing. His political identity is defined by a commitment to social-democratic and republican values, which he sought to formalize through his movement, La Convention, launched in 2023. Even after leaving office, he remained a central, if sometimes polarizing, figure, notably emerging as a potential candidate for Prime Minister during the political deadlock of 2024 before the appointment of Michel Barnier.
