The invisible engine powering a river of plasma at light speed
In short: We often see the glowing debris around a black hole, but the true power lies in its hidden mechanics. Deep within one of the universe's largest galaxies, an invisible titan directs a massive jet of hot gas across the cosmos, governed by twisted magnetic fields.
The supermassive black hole at the center of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 serves as a cosmic laboratory for extreme physics. While the black hole itself remains invisible to standard observation—requiring a planet-sized radio telescope array to detect directly—its influence is written in the behavior of surrounding matter. It sits nestled within the Virgo cluster of galaxies, specifically between the Virgo and Leo constellations. The location of this celestial object is situated between the Leo and Virgo constellations. It resides near the center of a massive cluster of galaxies.
The most striking evidence of its power is a high-speed jet of hot plasma that erupts from its vicinity. This 'river' of gas travels at nearly the speed of light. Observations captured by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope over a 13-year period reveal how this jet moves and evolves, showing it as a dynamic structure rather than a static beam. The jet is not just an accidental byproduct; it is a directed outflow shaped by the environment surrounding the black hole. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope recorded these specific movements in a time-lapse movie released on August 22, 2013. The footage highlights how the plasma river changes over more than a decade.
The mechanism behind this phenomenon involves the accretion disk—a swirling whirlpool of hot plasma orbiting the supermassive black hole. As this disk rotates, it generates powerful magnetic fields. These fields are twisted into a funnel shape by the rotation of the disk. The field lines act as a cosmic nozzle, constricting and directing the outflowing plasma into the high-speed jet we observe across the galaxy. The rotation of the accretion disk is what specifically causes the magnetic field to twist into its funnel shape. These lines then work to direct the gas away from the black hole's immediate area.
