Forget the 'birdbrain' insult: pigeons can actually recognize written words

In short: We often dismiss pigeons as mere 'flying rats,' but recent research suggests they possess a surprising cognitive skill. Scientists have successfully trained these birds to distinguish real English words from gibberish, demonstrating a level of visual word recognition previously thought to be unique to primates.

In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers demonstrated that pigeons can develop orthographic knowledge—the ability to visually recognize what printed words look like. Using a task where birds pecked at words for food or a star symbol for nonwords, the team trained pigeons to distinguish 308 four-letter words. While some birds struggled, four pigeons excelled, with the most successful individual recognizing between 58 and 60 words.

The birds did more than just memorize strings of letters; they developed a statistical understanding of language. By tracking the likelihood of certain letter pairs, known as bigrams—such as 'TH', 'HE', or 'EA'—the pigeons could identify entirely new words they had never seen before. They were even capable of distinguishing correctly spelled words from scrambled versions, such as 'vrey' instead of 'very'.

This discovery is significant because it marks the first time an orthographic brain has been identified in a nonprimate. Lead author Damian Scarf of the University of Otago suggests this ability might be an ancient trait. Since humans and pigeons shared a common ancestor roughly 300 million years ago, the cognitive flexibility required for such learning may have been present in our shared evolutionary history. This suggests that the fundamental mechanics of language processing might be more widespread across species than previously believed.
