Your environment can turn your genes on or off without changing your DNA
In short: For decades, we believed our genetic destiny was written in stone by the sequence of our nucleotides. But a field called epigenetics reveals a more fluid reality: your lifestyle and surroundings act as a dimmer switch, determining which parts of your genetic code actually get to run the show.
The term epigenetics was coined by British scientist C. David Allis in 2007. This field examines how cellular operations and inherited characteristics shift while the primary genetic code remains unchanged. While traditional genetics focuses on the 'text' of our DNA, epigenetics focuses on the 'punctuation'—the modifications that dictate how cells read that text. This distinction is crucial because it means that while your genetic code remains constant, the way your body expresses those genes is dynamic and responsive to the world around you.
Two primary mechanisms drive these changes. The first is DNA methylation, which involves adding a methyl group—a carbon atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms—directly to the DNA molecule. This process often results in the deactivation of vital genes, such as those responsible for producing specific enzymes or proteins. The second mechanism is histone modification. DNA is wound around proteins called histones; by altering the structure of these proteins, the body can change how accessible certain genes are for transcription, effectively locking or unlocking genetic information.
These mechanisms form a regulatory system that responds to external stressors. Research indicates that environmental factors like air pollution, metal contaminants, and organic pollutants can induce epigenetic changes. These modifications can impact human health outcomes and may even shape the heritable characteristics of human populations. By understanding these layers of complexity, scientists can better see how the interplay between our environment and our biology shapes evolution and individual health.
