Cardiology - Coronary Blood Supply · 5:13 · Video: Armando Hasudungan · Watch at the source

In short: While most organs receive blood through internal networks, the heart muscle relies on a unique external wrapping. To keep itself beating without interruption, the heart uses a specific dual-artery system to deliver oxygen and nutrients while simultaneously clearing away metabolic waste.

The coronary circulation is the primary mechanism for maintaining cardiac function. Because the heart muscle is constantly active, it requires a continuous supply of oxygen-rich blood. This is achieved through two main vessels: the left and right coronary arteries. These arteries wrap around the outside of the heart to penetrate its muscle tissues, ensuring that every part of the organ remains fueled.

The architecture of this system is highly specialized. The left main coronary artery serves the left side of the heart, including the left ventricle and left atrium. It branches into the left anterior descending artery, which supplies the front of the left side and the septum (the middle wall), and the left circumflex artery, which circles around to reach the outer and back sections. Conversely, the right coronary artery services the right ventricle, the right atrium, and critical electrical components like the SA and AV nodes, which govern the heart's rhythm.

The physiological significance of this layout cannot be overstated. Because these arteries are the sole providers of nutrients to the muscle, any obstruction—most commonly caused by atherosclerosis (the buildup of plaque in the inner lining)—can be catastrophic. When a coronary artery narrows or blocks, the resulting drop in oxygen flow can trigger a heart attack or lead to death. Understanding this branching pattern is essential for grasping how localized arterial issues translate into systemic cardiac failure.
