The three-part architecture of a complete scientific explanation
In short: Scientific literacy requires more than just stating a fact. This video explores the CER framework, a structured method used in classrooms to transform raw observations into robust, logical arguments.
The CER framework consists of three essential components: Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning. A Claim is the primary statement or conclusion being made. However, a claim alone is insufficient in science; it must be anchored by Evidence, which provides the data or observations that support the statement.
The final and most critical piece is Reasoning. This acts as the connective tissue, explaining exactly how the evidence supports the claim. By mastering this structure, students learn to move beyond simple memorization toward constructing coherent, evidence-based arguments.
