Why you accelerate even when your speed stays the same
In short: If you are spinning on a merry-go-round, your speedometer might stay steady, but your body is still under constant acceleration. This happens because acceleration isn't just about going faster; it is about any change in your velocity. To understand why, we have to look at the difference between speed and direction.
In physics, speed and velocity are distinct concepts. Speed is a scalar quantity, measuring only the distance traveled over a specific period of time, such as a car moving at 25 m/s. Velocity, however, is a vector quantity, meaning it incorporates both speed and a specific direction. For instance, a raindrop moving down at 1 m/s has a different velocity than a van traveling north at 25 m/s, despite the difference in magnitude.
Acceleration is defined as the change in velocity over time. Because velocity includes direction, an object is accelerating whenever its speed changes, its direction changes, or both occur simultaneously. This explains a common point of confusion in circular motion: an object moving in a circle at a constant speed is still accelerating. This is because its direction is constantly shifting, which means its velocity is constantly changing at every point along the path.
According to Newton’s Second Law of Motion, acceleration requires a net force. In circular motion, this specific force is known as centripetal force. It is always directed toward the center of the circle. You can observe this by swinging a ball on a string; the tension in the string provides the centripetal force necessary to constantly pull the ball inward. If you were to let go, the ball would cease to accelerate toward the center and instead travel in a straight line, maintaining its final velocity along a tangent to the circle.
