In short: In 1982, Hong Kong officials debated whether to build a second polytechnic. They chose a temporary site in Mong Kok, but a vision for a permanent campus eventually transformed a village site into a global academic powerhouse. Today, it stands as a statutory university with a massive research footprint.

The City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) was born from a specific policy need: the desire for a 'second polytechnic' following the 1972 establishment of the Hong Kong Polytechnic. While district administrators lobbied for locations in Tuen Mun and Tsuen Wan, the government initially opted for temporary premises in Mong Kok. The name 'City Polytechnic of Hong Kong' was eventually selected from nearly 300 public suggestions before the school officially opened on October 8, 1984.

The transition from a vocational polytechnic to a prestigious university was rapid. The institution was elevated to university status in 1994, adopting its current name. This growth was supported by significant infrastructure development, including the Yeung Kin Man Academic Building, which features 116 laboratories and a unique color-coded zoning system (purple, green, blue, yellow, and red) to organize classrooms and labs. The campus also houses specialized facilities like the millimetre wave state key laboratories in the Lau Ming Wai Academic Building.

Today, CityUHK is a statutory university governed by a council where the Chief Executive of Hong Kong appoints 15 of the 23 members. It maintains a global presence, recently ranking #52 in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and #47 in the USNEWS Global Rankings 2026. Its expansion continues with the 2024 opening of CityU (Dongguan) in the Songshan Lake High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, focusing on high-tech fields like materials science and intelligent manufacturing.
