Why climate change is causing the North Pole to drift eastward

In short: Earth spins like a giant top, but its axis isn't fixed. Recent findings suggest that melting ice sheets and shifting aquifers are redistributing the planet's mass, causing the geographic North Pole to drift steadily eastward at an accelerating rate.

The Earth's rotation occurs around an invisible axis, and the points where this axis intersects the surface are the geographic poles. While these poles naturally wander in decade-long cycles, scientists have noted a dramatic change in their movement. For much of the past century, the North Pole drifted a few centimeters annually, often trending toward Canada.

However, since 2000, the drift has shifted significantly. A University of Texas, Austin study reveals the North Pole is drifting east by roughly 75 degrees towards the Prime Meridian. This movement is driven by the redistribution of mass across the planet, specifically the massive melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet and ice loss in other regions.

This shift is occurring at a rate of approximately 10 centimeters per year. While this may not require an immediate recalculation of the planet's geographic pole, it carries significant implications. Experts predict that if present patterns persist, the Earth's geographic poles might relocate by as much as 89 feet (27 metres) by 2100. Such movements could eventually impact satellite and spacecraft navigation, as well as our ability to predict drought and ice loss.

It is important to distinguish this from the magnetic poles, which behave through an entirely different mechanism and reverse periodically over millions of years. The current geographic shift is a direct consequence of how mass is being redistributed as ice melts and aquifers are drained.
