From raw symbols to knowledge: the anatomy of a datum

In short: Data is often called the new oil, but it is useless in its raw state. To turn a simple sequence of symbols into human knowledge, information must undergo a rigorous transformation. Understanding this progression reveals how we move from noticing the world to mastering it.

At its most fundamental level, a datum is a single discrete or continuous value. It can be a concrete measurement, such as a temperature reading, or an abstract idea represented as a character or number. While raw data provides the basic units of meaning, it lacks the context required for human understanding. To make data useful, it must be organized into structures like tables, which provide the necessary framework for interpretation. The journey from observation to insight follows a specific cognitive and scientific progression. It begins with observations—statements about what we notice—which are then used to identify patterns, or regularities in the world. By identifying these patterns, we can describe the natural world in words and begin to uncover relationships, which are the interconnections between different parts of a system.

This logical flow allows scientists to move from simply seeing a fact to predicting future events. In modern practice, this process involves sophisticated technical stages. Before analysis can occur, raw data must be 'cleaned' to remove outliers and correct instrument or entry errors. Once refined, it is processed through calculation, visualization, and reasoning. As datasets reach the petabyte scale—a phenomenon known as 'big data'—traditional methods often fail. This has necessitated the rise of data science, which employs machine learning and artificial intelligence to extract insights from quantities of information that are otherwise impossible for humans to process alone.
